I’ve always loved animals, and it’s heartbreaking to think about any creature being confined, let alone a majestic mountain lion like Mufasa. Yet, for 20 long years, that’s exactly how Mufasa lived—chained in the back of a pickup truck.

Mufasa was part of a traveling circus in Peru, where his life was nothing short of a nightmare. He endured years of mistreatment, all for the sake of entertaining crowds and lining the pockets of his owner.

Thankfully, compassionate animal advocates stepped in to change his fate.

While awareness around the mistreatment of animals in circuses, zoos, and shows has grown, far too many still suffer in small, confining spaces, denied the freedom they deserve. Progress has been made in recent years, but the fight is far from over.

When Mufasa was discovered, he was tightly chained in the back of a truck—a cruel reality he had endured for two decades. His story is a painful reminder of the work still needed to protect animals from such suffering.

Mufasa’s luck arrived late in life, but thankfully, it did arrive. In 2015, the animal rights organization Animal Defenders International worked tirelessly for months to secure his release. They discovered Mufasa while in the process of shutting down a Peruvian circus notorious for its mistreatment of animals.

Freedom transformed Mufasa’s life. After years of suffering anxiety and oppression, he was finally given what every wild animal deserves—a chance to live his final years in the embrace of nature, free and on his own terms.

After his rescue from the circus, Mufasa enjoyed a brief but precious period of freedom before his health began to deteriorate.
