On the morning of December 4, 2024, tragedy struck when Thompson was fatally shot outside the Hilton Hotel on 6th Avenue. Despite being rushed to Mount Sinai West Hospital, the accomplished executive and devoted family man could not be saved, leaving a nation in shock over the senseless act.

The suspect, Luigi Mangione, is accused of using a 3D-printed pistol to carry out the attack. According to the New York Police Department, Mangione allegedly hid in the shadows and shot Brian Thompson from behind. After a tense five-day manhunt, Mangione was apprehended. His family later released a statement expressing their shock and extending condolences to Brian’s loved ones.

“Our family is deeply shocked and heartbroken by Luigi’s arrest. We are praying for the Thompson family and ask others to join us in praying for everyone affected by this tragedy,” the statement read.

Brian Thompson, fondly known as “B.T.” by friends and colleagues, was raised in Ames, Iowa, and went on to build a happy life with his family in Maple Grove, Minnesota. He is survived by his wife, Paulette, and their two sons.

A dedicated physical therapist with over two decades of experience, Paulette works at Park Nicollet Health Services, where her commitment to her patients mirrors her devotion to her family.

In her professional bio, Paulette emphasizes her passion for helping people not just recover, but exceed their physical goals. Her social media posts reflect a life filled with love and joy, often highlighting special moments with her family. On Instagram, she shared, “I love spending time with my two boys and taking them to their activities. I also enjoy boating, playing piano, biking, and traveling.”

All About Brian and Paulette’s Sons
Brian and Paulette are parents to two teenage sons, aged 19 and 16, both closely tied to Wayzata High School in Plymouth, Minnesota.

Their eldest son, a recent graduate, excelled in lacrosse, earning varsity letters for three years in a row. His coach, Brandon Carlson, remembered Brian as an active and supportive parent, always present at team events alongside Paulette. “Brian and Paulette were deeply involved and supportive of the entire team,” Coach Carlson said.

The Thompson family’s tight-knit bond and love for one another remain at the heart of the many tributes pouring in from friends, colleagues, and the community.


The assistant coach fondly recalled the unwavering support Brian and Paulette Thompson provided. “Brian was an amazing young man and the kind of teammate everyone would want,” he shared. Their younger son, currently a sophomore at Wayzata High School, is following in his brother’s footsteps, excelling in track and field.

Lived in Separate Homes
Reports from The Wall Street Journal revealed that Brian, 50, and Paulette “Pauley” Thompson had been living in separate residences, though they remained just a short distance apart in Maple Grove, Minnesota. Public real estate records show that in 2018, Brian purchased a $1 million home near his family.

Paulette’s Words About Brian
Following her husband’s tragic death, Paulette shared her heartbreak and disbelief in a text to FOX9. She described the news of the fatal shooting as “shattering” and reflected on Brian’s life.

“Brian was an incredibly loving, generous, and talented man who truly lived life to the fullest and touched countless lives,” she wrote. “Most importantly, he was a devoted father to our two sons and will be deeply missed.”

Threats Before the Attack
In an interview with NBC News, Paulette revealed that Brian had been receiving threats prior to the incident. According to the NYPD, the attack was premeditated.

“Yes, there had been some threats—though I don’t know the exact details,” she said. “He mentioned there were people who had been threatening him.” Despite these warnings, Brian, who was the CEO of the nation’s largest private health insurer, didn’t alter his travel routines.

“He didn’t change anything,” Paulette noted, adding that she was struggling to process the tragedy. “I can’t really give a thoughtful response right now,” she admitted. “I’m focused on consoling my children.”

As family, friends, and colleagues grapple with this senseless loss, Brian Thompson’s legacy lives on through his family and the countless lives he touched. May he rest in peace.
